ISBU PORN ALERT!

30 Jul

Okay, in my personal journeys on the “Corten Path”, we’ve done a LOT of cool things;

(in no particular order)

  • Steel Single Family Sanctuaries
  • Emergency Earthquake Medical Units ala ISBU
  • Corten Retreats harbored deep in Mountain Canyons
  • Beach Bungalows perched on the edge of Paradise
  • Steel Shelters in the Sierras
  • We’ve done multi-family glam…
  • Wonderful Worker and Staff Housing Modules
  • Heck, we’ve even done industrial and commercial ISBU goodness…

But we are NOT the only guys turning ISBUs into “Corten Coolness”.

This guy… this guy wins the prize!

At least, for THIS week… :)

If you like PIZZA (and I admit that it’s a part of our daily diet here in the hills) this guy gets the “Klein’s Corten Kings” award for the week!

“Del Popolo” takes ISBUs to a whole new level.

This nut took a 20′ ISBU and turned it into something out of an Italian DREAM!

(This is SO Freakin’ cool that we’re actually debating trying to build one ourselves. Can you imagine this rolling up at that family reunion? That’ll shut Aunt Hilda up… you know, the one in the mumu that always talks about how much she spent catering the whole affair…) :)

Um… where did that come from? I’d better go check my meds… LOL!

Anyway…

According to those fine folks over at DESIGNBOOM, this “Pizza Psychopath” Jon Darsky took a 20′ box and turned it into a rolling Pizza Kitchen. Not content with the usual industrial kitchen stuff, he stuffed that box with a REAL Italian wood fired pizza oven. Then, he replaced all the Corten Corrugation with glass, so you could watch him work!

(Note: Designboom guys are real nice and don’t use words like “Pizza Psychopath”. On the other hand, you know US. We just call ‘em like we see ‘em!) :)

You see, Jon wanted that 800 degrees of “Pizza Cookin Goodness” to shine through his wood-fired wonder of  his “Channel ISBU – Pizza Program”!

We can’t decide if his mobile pizzeria looks like a big TV or a huge oven…

We’ll let you be the judge. Either way, it’s just “Corten Coolness – Personified”!

Okay, admittedly – Jon spent big cash to make this work (we’re talking like almost $200 grand), but you know US… WE could do it for less. But, we couldn’t do it without Jon’s inspiration.

Forget MRE’s.

I can just picture this rolling up at the site of a Tornado or a Hurricane to feed aid and relief workers. After a long day struggling in debris and filth, can you imagine the smile you’d put on those guys faces when you handed them a gourmet wood fired pizza in 2 minutes flat?

In our version, we’d have pull out tables built in so the guys could plop down, take a load off and then enjoy the ambiance while they savor that pizza!

THAT’S how you thank guys for helping others.

Excuse me now, I have to go convince my neighbor that we need to borrow his big cargo van… I hope he doesn’t mind that were gonna cut it all up and then reassemble it. LOL!

No anchovies were harmed in the production of this post. Nor, aside from some light kidding, were any delicate sensibilities.

We DO highly recommend DESIGNBOOM, the guys that we ruthlessly swiped this post from. If you want to see cutting edge architecture, then DESIGNBOOM is a VERY good place to start.

And, they don’t call people names… like some people we all know… LOL!

I think the guys at MUVBOX do it much, much better.

MUVBOX is cool, but as cool as it is… it’s been done to death.

Ever since that Adam Kalkin fold-out box debuted long ago, it’s just been “variations on a theme”. While they’re cool and industry specific, they’re just don’t have that “WOW” factor anymore. ALL of us are building boxes with fold outs to expand and contract to spaces created.. It’s just common sense.

In it’s defense… the above mobile restaurant is something that you won’t see every day. And not many will go there, due to the risks and costs.

      Thanks for your comment! :)
